About Piopio College

We provide a positive, safe, supportive caring environment which promotes quality learning and we have a strong focus on meeting the needs of individual students.

Located just outside the Piopio township, 24 km from Te Kuiti, Piopio College is a co-educational secondary school that serves an extensive area in the western North Island of New Zealand. Our classes begin at Year 7 and continue through to Year 13.

While academic achievement is highly valued, our students are also strongly encouraged to develop as leaders by taking responsibility and contributing positively to those around them. Our curriculum and extra-curriculum activities provide ample opportunities for students to gain skills in recognising and solving problems, the desire to become lifelong learners and an appreciation of the dual heritage of the King Country and Aotearoa.

Curriculum

While we focus on certain core subjects that are essential for your child’s success in NCEA Levels one, two and three, students here are also encouraged to take elective courses that are of interest to them. Many of these subjects have been chosen in conjunction with parents and students.

To ensure that our students get the most out of their education here, our class sizes are structured to be smaller compared to other schools. This allows teachers to give students more of their time and attention, ensuring that your child builds knowledge and character at the same time.

Activities

Set in a well developed park-like environment, Piopio College encourages students to partake in a number of sporting, outdoor and cultural extra curricular activities. Our noteworthy sporting facilities include  a school gym, a 400m athletic track, netball and tennis courts, a 25m swimming pool, hockey, football, rugby and cricket pitches.

Our 20 acre farm and horticultural areas enable students to experiment, create and solve problems as well as taking farming courses and discovering sustainability.

Our drama has gained a good reputation both locally and nationally.

For me it's important to set a positive environment and example to the Rangatahi of Piopio College. I'm here to help promote the importance of being at school, and to help the kids realise their potential, and to let them know they can do so much more than they can imagine. Piopio college is special to me because it is my home town, with the people, teachers, and students whose company I really enjoy.

Tēnā Tātou katoa.
My name is Heath Barnsdall. My goal is to work hard and be a positive role model in and out of school. I also want to motivate my fellow peers and students of our kura to strive for success. A common saying I refer back to is, do the mahi get the treats.
