9GB recently visited the Mahoenui Giant Weta colony.
It’s been estimated that there could be up to 400,000
of these amazing insects living in the reserve.
They’re not easy to spot, so it was a good job
we had Mrs Rauputu’s experienced eye to help.

The Mahoenui Giant Weta, is an iconic New Zealand
species; one of the largest insects in the world.
We were very fortunate to see it in its natural
environment and think about what’s needed
to conserve it for the future.

This supports our work with students to develop
values such as care for the environment and te tuakiri
o te tangata o tenei whenua (an appreciation of our heritage
as people of the King Country and Aotearoa New Zealand).
