30th Year for Kapahaka Festival
The 30th year of the Maniapoto Secondary School Kapa Haka Festival was celebrated at Piopio College September 13. More than 500 people attended the festival, where 4 groups from Piopio College, Te Wharekura o Maniapoto, Otorohanga College and Te Kuiti High School performed their best waiata and haka to delight the vocal crowd. The festival was started in 1983 by Piopio College’s former Te Reo Maori teacher Hinekahukura Aranui to promote and improve Maori culture so it was fitting the 30th anniversary was celebrated at the venue where it all began. There was a wide range of support from Kohanga Reo right up to our senior citizens enjoying the show. Congratulations to the staff, students and sponsors and Maniapoto Trust Board for making this such a successful occasion.
