HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Hoturoa and Tainui te waka
Hoturoa and his people voyaged from Hawaiki to New Zealand, they stopped in many places around New Zealand. One of those places was Mōkau where they took shelter. Hoturoa was the commander of the waka Tainui and a chief. He is the ancestor of the Tainui people.
The anchor stone of the Tainui waka can be found at Maniaroa Marae in Mōkau.
Te Piopiotanga o te rīwai
The name first given by Māori to the area know as Piopio was Te Piopiotanga o te rīwai, this means the withering of the potato. Te Piopiotanga o te rīwai was an area where there were many crops and community vegetable gardens. There was a time when the potato crops had blight and it caused the potatoes to wither. This was an important event in the area as it depleted the winter crops to feed the community.
The first inhabited area was in Paemako which is where the first school was, and the first trading store. Places such as Te Piopiotanga o te rīwai were named later as the area grew.
Te Piopiotanga o te rīwai was used as a thoroughfare from the port of Mōkau through to other areas.
Piopio Public School
In 1921 8 acres of Māori land was acquired to establish Piopio School (where the primary school is). In 1957 a further 16 acres was acquired to expand the school grounds which includes the college area. Piopio Public School was the first consolidated school in New Zealand and the first to get a bus service in New Zealand.
